Cognitive Therapy for Patients
with Personality Disorders

Powerful Strategies for Overcoming Resistance
and Maximizing Clinical Change

Judith Beck, Ph.D.

Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., Aaron T. Beck, M.D., and colleagues have extended the application of cognitive therapy treatment to patients with a variety of personality disorders. These patients require specialized strategies to enable them to make progress in therapy. As the therapist, you must have a conceptual framework to understand specific disorders and how treatment must be varied to plan therapy effectively. Additionally, you must have a clear working formulation of the individual case to plan sessions, form a solid working alliance, and help the patient make the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive changes necessary for improvement. Often the same dysfunctional beliefs and disruptive personality patterns that help maintain psychological distress interfere with the patients ability to learn and change in therapy.

Specific techniques that enable you to educate patients about their beliefs and to test and modify rigid thinking patterns are particularly valuable when working with personality disorders. This workshop will address problems common to patients with personality disorders: missing sessions, failing to do homework, jumping from crisis to crisis, displaying anger toward the therapist, and showing low motivation for change, to name a few. Participants will learn a variety of diagnosis-specific techniques for working with the most challenging Axis II patients. Dr. Beck’s teaching strategies actively engage you through hands-on participation which includes discussion of cases, role-playing, imaginal exercises, viewing of videotapes, and feedback on conceptualization worksheets.
