Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D.
Adult psychiatric patients have a high incidence
ofaggressive behavior toward selves and others, including mental health workers .Some 25% of psychotherapists and front-line staff will be assaulted by their patients Some .40
% of psychiatric patients have a history of violent behavior before admission to a psychiatric hospital.
In terms of various forms of self-injurious behavior , a practicing psychotherapist will average 5 suicidal patients per month. 1 in 2 psychiatrists and 1 in 6 clinical psychologists will have a patient who commits suicide.
In this workshop , Dr. Meichenbaum will consider the developmental nature of aggressive behavior from a life-span perspective and explore how various forms of psychiatric comorbidity such as substance abuse, bipolar
disorder, PTSD and personality disorders can further increase the likelihood of aggressive behavior in adult psychiatric patients.
Dr. Meichenbaum will provide a Case Conceptualization Model that informs both clinical decision-making and the ways to determine the patient's risk assessment of dangerousness.
Practical intervention guidelines will be offered as a way to defuse aggressive patient behaviors, to conduct interventions with suicidal patients, and ways to conduct skills-based
cognitive- behavioral interventions. He will use videotape case presentations and a detailed Handout.
