When Push Comes to Shove: Advances
in the Treatment of Domestic Violence: Research, Theory, and Clinical Interventions
David Wexler, Ph.D.
Everyone working in the field of counseling or mental health knows
the story: yelling, threatening, hitting, slapping - even weapons and murder. The purpose of this workshop is to offer a comprehensive view of the origins of domestic violence and
describe the typologies of partner abuser: one size does not fit all! Participants will learn about theories that shape the field, screening and risk assessment of offenders and victims, and about political
controversies in the field.
Interweaving the latest research about the origins of relationship violence and the newest clinical interventions, Wexler outlines Domestic Violence 2000, a group treatment program that integrates
self-psychological treatment with education about the politics of abuse and comprehensive skills training. Issues in individual and couples’ treatment of domestic violence will also be addressed.
Participants will learn a variety of practical, evidenced-based interventions from a nationally recognized expert in the field of relationship violence. Particular emphasis will be placed on methods
for dealing with resistant and difficult clients.
Attendees should be prepared to hear new and controversial perspectives on these complex issues. In addition, they will learn valuable new information regarding counter
-transference, personal reactions, and issues of self-disclosure when working with this population.
